For the 50th anniversary celebration of the Stulberg International String Competition, Lucas Richman was commissioned to write a violin concerto to honor conductor/educator Julius Stulberg, a much beloved figure in the Kalamazoo community for decades mid-20th century. The titles of the work’s three movements come from the long list of quotable phrases (“Stulbergisms”) issued by Maestro Stulberg to his young musicians in the Kalamazoo Junior Symphony Orchestra over the course of his 31 years as the organization’s leader.

Two main musical motifs are woven throughout the piece, the first of which come from the word “legacy” for which 6 pitches (DEGACD) have been assigned to the 6 letters of the word. The second motive is found as a musical declamation of a quote from the Greek philosopher, Pericles, “What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others.”

The second movement of “Concerto No. 2 for Violin: Legacy” was performed by all twelve semi-finalists in the 2025 Stulberg International String Competition. Lauren Yoon was chosen to be the soloist for the world premiere of the work with the Kalamazoo Symphony (March 28, 2026).
