Program Notes:

For the 50th anniversary celebration of the Stulberg International String Competition, Lucas Richman was commissioned to write a violin concerto in honor of conductor/educator Julius Stulberg, a much-beloved figure in the Kalamazoo community for decades mid-20th century. The resultant work, “Concerto No. 2 for Violin: Legacy,” represents in music the important impact teachers and mentors can have on future generations.

Richman additionally adapted the 2nd movement of the concerto, “A Teachable Moment,” for solo viola, solo cello and solo bass as all potential semi-finalists would be required to perform the piece in the 2025 competition. “A Teachable Moment” is the focal point of the concerto, utilizing a musical declamation of a quote from the Greek philosopher, Pericles, “What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others.” A six-note motive, D-E-G-A-C-D (LEGACY), provides an underpinning for the Pericles quote which is articulated by the soloist in a rhythmic declamation of the original Greek text.

Also available for Viola and Bass.
